Company Fined after Workers Injured

Tyre company Pirelli Tyres Ltd have been fined after 2 employees suffered broken arms after using the same machine at the factory in Carlisle. On the 29th November 2013, an employee was loading a stripline machine when his left arm got pulled into the roller.

On the 31st of August 2015, another employee suffered the same injury after he was trying to make an adjustment during a production run. An investigation by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) found the machine was not properly guarded despite the first incident. Both of the incidents occurred at Pirelli’s Tyre factory at Dalston Road, Carlisle.

Pirelli Tyres Ltd of Derby Road, Burton-upon-Trent pleaded guilty at Carlisle Magistrates Court to two breaches of Regulation 11 (1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. The company was fined £512,000 and ordered to pay £5,820 in costs.
