Most of the people working in offices can agree that files and paperwork pile up on the desk constantly, coffee stains and food crumbs appear on a daily basis and dust seems to collect on surfaces every time. There are key benefits in keeping your desk and work surroundings clean and we highlighted them below.

Working at a messy, unkempt desk first thing in the morning can raise your stress levels as it is unpleasant to look at and also makes it hard to find needed items which can slow you down. A quick clean up before you leave work can make a huge difference the next day!

A clear space equals a clear mind and this is important when you have to productive and efficient. Keeping your desk clean will make it easier to focus on your work.

Did you know that the average office desk can host more bacteria than a public toilet seat? Your desk could be harbouring germs or mold from viruses or crumbs. Cleaning desks by wiping them down will avoid the spread of germs and illnesses!

Having a neat desk is the easiest way to impress your clients and give a good impression of the company as they won't leave with the impression that you could be disorganised and unprofessional.

Leaving your desk cluttered with documents at the end of the day could potentially allow for sensitive information to be lost or taken by unauthorised people. Also, when the worksite isn’t clean, it may increase the chance that a hazard will go unnoticed

As you start clearing up your desk frequently you will find yourself with more space to get things done rather than pushing the mess to the side and adding more to the pile. Things will be at easy access and you can objects move around easily

As you spend a large amount of time with co-workers, you want to make sure that your they are comfortable while doing their jobs to promote unity in the team.  Their productivity could drop significantly when working in a messy and unclean workplace which puts to jeopardy the success of the organisation.

Did you know that a poorly equipped and arranged work station is a major contributing factor in the development of many work-related upper limb disorders (WRULDs)? Conditions can be both short and long term but in most cases cause a lot of avoidable pain, discomfort and stress. Other associated symptoms include temporary eyestrain and headaches, and fatigue/stress.

Many employers and employees are completely unaware of the impact on health that a poorly arranged work station can have.

The hazards associated with Display Screen Equipment work stations must therefore be properly assessed so that they are adequately equipped and adjustable to suit the user’s needs.
