The HSE has issued a safety alert after new scientific research has shown that exposure to welding fumes, even mild welding, can cause lung cancer and possibly kidney cancer. This means there has been a change in HSE enforcement expectations in relation to the control of exposure to welding fumes including those from mild steel welding.
All businesses involved in welding will need to ensure effective engineering controls are provided and correctly used to control fume arising from the welding activities being undertaken.
