25 year anniversary: Managing Director saves police officer’s life
Posted 09th April 2019

25 years ago, Libben Health and Safety’s Managing Director saved the life of a police officer following a terrorist attack.

Kevin Edwards - a Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health - was serving as a Corporal in the first Battalion Grenadier Guards.

The Attack

On the evening of 20 March 1994, a Lynx helicopter, was in the process of landing at the large British Army base at Crossmaglen.

When the Lynx was hovering 100 feet over the helipad, a mortar round hit the aircraft on the tail's boom, which was severed from the fuselage. The machine spun out of control, but the pilot was able to crash-land the Lynx inside the base.

The Rescue

Three members of the crew managed to get out with minor injuries, but a member of the Royal Ulster Constabulary was trapped inside the blazing wreckage.

Kevin rescued the constable just before the fuel tanks and the ammunition started to explode, and performed emergency first aid whilst under fire from the exploding ammunition. This saved the constable’s life.

The Aftermath

Author Toby Harnden described the incident as the most successful IRA operation against a helicopter in the course of the Troubles.

As a result of saving the constable’s life, and dealing with other major terrorist incidents, Kevin received a General Commanding Officer (Northern Ireland) Commendation ‘for excellent service as Company Medic’ in 1995.

Commenting on the impact the incident had on his life, Kevin said: “I became extremely passionate about health and safety, particularly saving people’s lives. I also wanted to advise people on how to prevent and reduce the risk of accidents in the workplace, as well as emergency preparedness in case something goes wrong.”
