Did you know the government's proposal to include first aid in schools?
Across England all-state funded schools will now be required to teach, first aid as part of health education. From 2020 first aid will be implemented within the school curriculum for primary school children and young people in secondary schools. All children will learn areas of first aid appropriate to their level which may include how to deal with common injuries, how to administer CPR and the purpose of defibrillators and more.
Back in January 2019, The Education Secretary expressed the importance of every child having the chance to learn life-saving skills through first aid. As we soon approach the new year these plans will be going ahead in the next few months for health education to be taught in every school. Many organisations have supported this campaign such as St John’s ambulance, British Heart Foundation and British Red Cross. Research from the British Red Cross found that 95% of adults wouldn’t be able, confident or willing to help in 3 examples of life-threatening first aid emergencies. We discover the increase of lives that could be saved teaching lifesaving skills to the next generation.
Simon Gillespie, Chief Executive of the British Heart Foundation, said:
"There are 30,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests every year, and each day people needlessly die because bystanders don’t have the confidence or knowledge to perform CPR and defibrillation. This is why all schoolchildren should be given the opportunity to learn these skills."
This is a great step for the next generation to be learning life-saving skills. So, for us adults, we need to ensure we are learning the key basic skills to make a difference. If a child can save, let's learn to save more.
